Pho vs Pho
I chose to do my discussion on this “Pho Argument” as it is something I recently came across this past week, I feel like it is a very niche and interesting argument or discussion that is happening. I am also half asian, and half black, and considering the argument is between two minorities groups that I am apart of I thought my insight or opinion on it may be interesting.
There are multiple issues with this arguement but frequently seen issues are racism, misinformation, and disregarding of credible opinions. In the comments of multiple posts I had seen on this argument, there is racist comments being thrown at each side as if it is a little game or not a big deal. There is not an appropriate way to handle an argument, especially something that could be considered trivial to many people in bother communities.
Specifcally with this argument, people were asking Vietnamese descent if it is okay to add other seasonings, or condiments into their Pho as one creator had made a video that went viral and sparked up that conversation. The main condense was that it is okay as it is a dish with a broth, and could be “dressed” to one’s fitting and often Vietnamese restaurants have condiments for you to add to your dish to your taste. Some agree, and some disagreed; but the respect from differing opinions wasn’t there.
There was also a bit of misinformation going around, people stating each group or side was saying this or that but no videos, comments, or anything could be found to back it up.
To make this argument a more positive, intuitive, and productive discussion; these would be my rules.
- Be Respectful
Maintaining basic respect in an argument or discussion is necessary for productive and positive environment, even if you dont agree with the opposing party.
- Avoid Overgenerailzation
Stick to examples or evidence that you can back up, avoid making broad statements or making false claims.
- Be Open-Minded
It is important to be willing to consider the opposing sides point of view, and accept that you may not always be right or “win”.
- Stay On Topic
Avoid straying away from the main topic, keeping the discussion focused on the issue at hand instead of discussing irrelevant matters will help there be a more constructive debate.
- Actively Listen
Making sure to thoroughly read the other person’s argument before responding, and making sure you address valid points and understand their perspective to communicate effectively.
