Using the Toulmin Method in Online Communication

By using the Toulmin Method online, it can help individuals create more structured and persuasive arguments, as well as fostering more thoughtful and construction discussions or debates. The key components in the Toulmin Method— claims, data, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal; can help clarify positions, form proper counterarguments, and present evidence logically and where it is relevant. Which ultimately makes debates, more productive and reduces the likelihood of having unfounded or emotionally charged claims from being presented.

For example, the video “60 democrats vs 60 republicans debate the 2024 election” created by the channel Jubilee October 27th, 2024. I believe this video could be a perfect example of where the Toulmin method can be beneficial and hurtful in a social debate. Using the Toulmin method each side can challenge each other’s ideology and support their own through claims, supporting data, and rebuttals. However they can also harm their idea by being in an echo chamber, and not listening to each side thoroughly; also believing their side or beliefs are the correct beliefs and that is final.

There are multiple limitations from using the Toulmin Method in debates, online discussions, or social media interactions. For example echo chambers, filter bubbles, and emotional influence. A debate can be driven by emotions, quick reactions, and personal biases. While the Toulmin Method encourages logical and structure arguments, there isn’t room for emotional arguments to happen. Emotional arguments can subtract from the impact of the debate or discussion, when it is clear that emotions are getting in the way of a positive and productive debate or discussion. Echo chambers and filter bubbles also pose as an issue of challenge to using the Toulmin Method for online discussions or debates, as consumers are often presented with media that supports their beliefs and opinions online. This can cause either side to have narrow perspectives and inadequate counterarguments, which is a key component of the Toulmin Method; rebuttals and counter claims.

Critical thinking skills and information literacy are crucial for effectively applying the Toulmin method to discussions and social media interactions. These skills help individuals assess the relevance and credibility of information, as well as the to ability to engage in dialogue and construct well-reasoned and sensible arguments. Utilizing the Toulmin Method alongside with Critical thinking allows individuals to evaluate whether their claims are clear, relevant to the discussion, and worth debating. Information literacy is supported by the Toulmin Method as it ensures information that is stated isn’t unverified, biased, or misleading; leading to backing and rebuttals. Through Information Literacy the content in the argument can be reliable, credible, and relevant.

So while the Toulmin Method provides the framework for structured, logical debates or discussions it does have several challenges that may be encountered with this method. However understanding how to appropriately use the Toulmin Method in online discussions and debates, and avoiding being overly emotional, echo chambers or filter bubbles can lead to many healthy debates and discussions.
