Positives and Negatives
While I don't believe that social networks are responsible for promoting mental health in their users, I do think they are responsible for monitoring content on their platforms that can negatively impact users mental health. For example, from my personal experience Twitter is a social networking platform that has very little preventative measures to ensure violent, pornographic, or gorey content is not promoted / allowed on their platform. It is very easy to have content that will negatively affect ones mental health be seen, so strictly monitoring what is allowed on social networking platforms should be a responsibility of social networking sites.
I believe that different social networking sites do offer different benefits and drawbacks. Take pinterest for example, their social networking platform is great for sharing photos with others, disturbing the content to other who may like it, and allowing users of their platform to create collections to save photos they find inspirational. A drawback pinterest has though, is that communication is very limited and not promoted through their network. Compared to instagram, another social networking for sharing photos in a somewhat similar manner, communication is much more accessible and promoted on their platform. Each social networking has their own benefits, and drawbacks.
